1. I bought too many doughnuts.
2. I ate too many doughnuts.
3. I know way too much about the statistical, demographic, and sociological pre-reqs that foster the Justin Bieber model of commercial success
4. I’m excited about the fact I actually get to do work here, they give me tasks!
Saw midnight premiere, can’t believe some people told me to line up at 2-4 PM. Stupidest thing ever. Shannon and I were so pissed off by 10 and I legit wanted to leave, I was so jet lagged and bored and the lion suit was chafing but I wasn’t really wearing pants underneath (didn’t stop me by 11 though…sorry HP fandom of Vancouver). The movie wasn’t that huge of a deal for me. I’ve been able to divorce the books from the movies, in that I waaay prefer the books and I’m pretty meh about the movies, so while this occasion is sad, to me Harry Potter ended in 2007. That said, I think this film is the best one yet. It’s not Citizen Kane or anything. The movies are more style than substance. It’s just that this one is really, really, stylish.
So I know we’re supposed to do this one day at a time but I suck at persevering at things so I don’t think that would work out for me.
Day 1 : Your favorite book. Deathly Hallows
Day 2 : Your favourite movie. DHPT2 with POA a close second. I like the dark and violent ones because they’re a different tone from the books, thus showing some actual artistic risk and novelty. Counter-example: GOF.
Day 3 : Is there any of the films adaptations that have made you angry because they’ve ignored important parts of the book? All of them…?
Day 4 : Least favourite female character and why. Ginny - it might have something to do with the actress, who is the worst major character actor/actress in the series imo. But even in the books - for such a trumped up chick, JK Rowling didn’t really sufficiently develop her.
Day 5 : Favourite female character and why. Hermione. I know, creative. Imo, she’s a serious milestone in female literary characters, up there with Lady Macbeth, Emma Woodhouse, Anna Karenina, Jane Eyre, and Eowyn. She’s smart, kind, assertive, brave, extremely emotionally expressive and spends most of the series with bushy hair and buck teeth. On a literary note, she has a distinct voice. Contrast with Ginny, who has like eight throwaway lines in the series that can easily be switched with Hannah Abbott’s.
Day 6 : What do you think would be your favourite lesson. "It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be." - Dumbledore. Also, the Agape Principle - pervasive, but constantly challenged throughout the series. Both show Judeo-Christian influence on HP.
Day 7 : Favourite male character and why. Snape. His story, as opposed to Harry’s or Dumbledore’s, shows the costs of pursuing goodness without pretense of eventual reward, recognition, or self-satisfaction. Oh, but also Dumbledore. I like how he’s simultaneously static/dynamic. With every book he’s revealed to be more and more complex. It feels like he’s changed, but not really, we’re just less ignorant.
Day 8 : Least favourite male character and why. No idea…Percy Weasley?
Day 9 : Favourite ship. Non-romantic? Snape/Dumbledore. My two fave characters are best together. Romantic…I’m not sure, HP romance is pretty boring. Lily/Snape? Grindeldore? Note how both are barely touched upon…
Day 10 : Horcruxes or Hallows. Horcruxes.
Day 11 : What character would you say you are most like. Lupin
Day 12 : Team Voldermort or Team Harry. Team Harry, I like its casual dress code
Day 13 : Who would be your best friends at hogwarts? (Three only) Neville, Hermione, Ron!
Day 14 : Your favorite Golden Trio moment. Gotta be when they all met each other for the first time on the train.
Day 15 : Books or movies? Books
Day 16 : If you had to meet one member of the cast, who would it be? Alan Rickman
Day 17 : Out of all the characters that died, if you could bring one back, who would it be? Fred Weasley!
Day 18 : Any part of the books/movies that makes you cry. Prince’s Tale in film and text made me weepy, but none else. Oh, except the epilogue, for shitting on the Mona Lisa.
Day 19 : Favorite spell. Expecto patronum
Day 20 : Favorite Unforgivable Curse. Avada Kedavra
Day 21 : Would you rather own The Invisibility Cloak, The Resurrection Stone or The Elder Wand? Elder Wand
Day 22 : Favorite professor. Snape!!! His voice…
Day 23 : Least favourite book. COS
Day 24 : Favorite Death Eater. Bellatrix Lestrange
Day 25 : Favorite quote(s). "After all this time?" "Always." That ruined me, man.
Day 26 : Favorite magical creature. Hippogriff
Day 27 : What house would you want to be in.
Day 28 : Favorite chapter in HP series. Prince’s Tale, in case you couldn’t tell by now
Day 29 : Favorite Marauder. Lupin
Day 30 : Beauxbatons, Durmstrang or Hogwarts? Hogwarts, of course!
Can’t believe this question wasn’t asked - my patronus, fyi, would be a doe. I know, deer are the most ubiquitous patronii in canon, but I loved Bambi before I loved Harry Potter.
So I’m back in Vancouver. My plan was to stop updating after returning to the routine of everyday life, but I think I’ll continue writing stuff, albeit less frequently and with a more introspective (read: self-indulgent and whiny) twist. I don’t think anybody reads these (the text ones), but it does give me some misguided sense that my life is actually taking place and that the things I do have some form of imprint on the story of the world in a manner less muddy and more accessible than through abstract quantum interactions. Not that that’s necessarily true, the whole me-mattering-in-the-context-of-the-universe thing, but I think this is a benign narcissism. At the very least, I get to practice my writing.
In short: fewer noms, fewer luls, more “what if you were like, not alive, but not dead?” Good stuff.
eta: the reason the layout changed is because i’m no longer in china and there’s no pandas in canada. duh.
